The Three-wattled Bellbird (Procnias tricarunculatus) is a sizable bird belonging to the cotinga family, famous for its extravagant appearance and extreme sexual dimorphism. The adult male is unmistakable: his body, wings, and tail are a rich reddish-chestnut (rufous) color, while his head, neck, and upper chest are bright, pure white. His strangest feature is the three wattles (fleshy, thick worm-like appendages) of grayish-black color hanging from the base of his bill, which can be extended when he sings. The female, in drastic contrast, is cryptic: her back is deep olive green and her underparts are yellowish with heavy green streaks; furthermore, she completely lacks the wattles and the white head.

It is an endemic species of Central America (from Honduras to Panama) and a strict altitudinal migrant. During the breeding season, it inhabits the canopy of mature cloud forests and montane forests between 1,200 and 2,500 meters above sea level (such as in Monteverde, Costa Rica). After breeding, it undertakes complex migrations to lowlands and coastal areas (including mangroves and gallery forests) on both the Pacific and Caribbean slopes to seek food during the rainy season.

Males spend most of their day in the tops of the cloud canopy. To attract females, they perch on a dry, exposed branch of a very tall tree that acts as a stage (dispersed lek). When a female approaches, the male performs a short, noisy flight, crouches on the branch, opens his bill immensely, shakes his wattles, and emits a deafening squeak followed by a forceful metallic sound ('scraaaack... BONG!'). The force of the sound is so great that the bird is often thrown backward on the branch.

Strict frugivore. Its diet is overwhelmingly based (over 90%) on fruits of the Lauraceae family (Ocotea, Persea, Nectandra), which are rich in lipids. By swallowing the drupes whole and then spitting out the seed far from the mother tree, the bellbird acts as one of the most important forest engineers and seed dispersers of the cloud forest. Adults do not have many predators due to their size, but their eggs and chicks are highly vulnerable to capuchin monkeys, coatis, and toucans.

They are not monogamous. A single successful male in the lek can mate with multiple females throughout the season. Once fertilized, the female departs and assumes absolutely all parental duties. She builds an incredibly flimsy and transparent cup nest using fine twigs and dry tendrils, usually placed in the frond of a tree fern or dense shrub in the understory (2-5 meters high). She lays a single, heavily mottled brown egg. The female incubates it alone for about 20 days. After hatching, she feeds the single chick a diet composed almost exclusively of regurgitated wild avocados, until it leaves the nest about 4 weeks later.

Loss of Biological Corridors: Due to its complex altitudinal migration, protecting the cloud forest where it nests is not enough.
