A large, stocky, and highly cryptic wetland bird. The plumage is beautifully patterned for camouflage, featuring a buff-yellow or creamy background densely covered with intricate blackish-brown horizontal bars, streaks, and vermiculations. The throat is white with a central pale brownish vertical stripe. It possesses a long, thick, pale yellowish neck, a sturdy and sharply pointed yellowish bill, and large, bright yellow eyes. The legs and large feet are greenish-yellow. In flight, it appears broad-winged and heavy, with a slightly hunched silhouette.
