A fast-growing, single-stemmed, semi-woody evergreen tree resembling a palm, capped by a crown of deeply palmately lobed leaves. It lacks true bark and branches under normal conditions. The species produces large, elongated, smooth-skinned berry-like fruits that mature from green to yellow-orange, housing a vibrant orange or reddish flesh filled with numerous small, mucilage-covered black seeds and an enzyme-rich milky latex.
