Costa Rica, a nation globally recognized for its lush rainforests and pioneering environmental stewardship, is now extending its powerful green ethos to the vast blue expanse of its oceans. In a landmark move, the country has joined a regional crusade to safeguard one of the most important marine ecosystems on the planet, reaffirming its commitment not just to its terrestrial species, but to the incredible biodiversity thriving beneath the waves.
This initiative centers on the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR), a monumental conservation effort in partnership with Colombia, Ecuador, and Panama. Together, these nations have formally protected a massive marine “superhighway” spanning over 500,000 square kilometers. This corridor is a critical migratory route for a spectacular array of species that define the richness of Costa Rica’s waters, including hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, humpback whales, and giant manta rays.
The goal is twofold: to protect this irreplaceable biodiversity from threats like illegal fishing and pollution, and to ensure the well-being of the coastal communities whose livelihoods are intrinsically linked to the health of the ocean.
Leading on the Global Stage
Costa Rica’s commitment doesn’t stop at its maritime borders. The nation is taking a prominent leadership role on the world stage by co-hosting the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) with France in Nice, in June 2025. This crucial summit aims to accelerate global action to meet Sustainable Development Goal 14: “Life Below Water.”

By spearheading what it calls “Ocean Diplomacy,” Costa Rica is championing international cooperation and pushing for stronger, science-based policies to govern the high seas. This demonstrates a profound understanding that the challenges facing our oceans—from climate change to plastic pollution—are shared responsibilities that require a united global response.
Action at Home: A Vision for a Sustainable Future
This international leadership is built on a solid foundation of domestic action. The Costa Rican government is actively implementing its National Plan on Marine Debris to combat pollution and is continually working to balance economic growth with environmental protection.
The country’s vision is clear: to prove that sustainable activities like regulated eco-tourism and responsible fishing are not only possible but are the most intelligent path toward a prosperous future. By protecting its marine resources, Costa Rica is investing in its most valuable asset and ensuring that future generations can marvel at the incredible species that call its waters home.
This comprehensive strategy—combining regional alliances, global leadership, and national policies—cements Costa Rica’s status as a true planetary champion, dedicated to preserving the rich tapestry of life, both on land and in the deep blue sea.
